I support the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Texans while also supporting practical measures that promote responsible firearm ownership and community safety.

Protect Lawful Gun Ownership

I oppose blanket firearm bans and broad confiscation policies aimed at responsible gun owners.

Public-safety policy should focus on people who actually pose a threat or violate the law rather than treating lawful gun ownership itself as the problem.

Use the Public-Safety Tools Texas Already Has

After reviewing the situations that red-flag laws are generally intended to address, I am not convinced Texas needs a separate red-flag law at this time.

Texas law already provides emergency mental-health detention when there is a substantial risk of serious harm to a person or others and immediate detention is necessary.

Texas also has protective-order laws that can prohibit firearm possession in qualifying cases. The state's Anti-Red Flag Act, effective September 1, 2025, bars Texas governmental entities from enforcing unauthorized extreme-risk protective orders while expressly leaving specified existing protective orders outside that prohibition.

My approach is to use those existing tools effectively and evaluate any specific gap if one is demonstrated, rather than creating a broader new process simply because other states have one.

Expand Voluntary Firearm-Safety Education

I support making free, voluntary, DPS-approved firearm-safety education widely available, especially for first-time gun owners and Texans ages 18 through 24.

• Be voluntary, not a condition of purchasing or owning a firearm.

• Be available online and in person, including in rural communities.

• Use existing License to Carry instructors and curriculum where practical instead of creating a new bureaucracy.

• Include practical instruction on safe handling, secure storage, Texas firearm law, conflict de-escalation, and suicide prevention.

• Offer incentives such as a free locking device and possible credit toward the classroom portion of a License to Carry course.

Offer Families an Optional School-Based Safety Course

I also support allowing high-school seniors to participate in an optional firearm-safety unit with parent or guardian permission.

• Safe handling.

• Secure storage.

• Texas firearm law.

• Conflict de-escalation.

• Suicide prevention.

There would be no live firearms or ammunition on school campuses. Any range instruction would occur separately with a certified instructor and additional consent.

Encourage Responsible Storage

Safe storage should be encouraged through education and access to locking devices rather than by treating responsible owners as criminals.

Providing free locking devices as part of voluntary safety training is one practical way to reduce barriers to responsible storage.

Focus Enforcement on Actual Threats and Criminal Conduct

Public-safety resources should focus on violent offenders, domestic abusers, illegal firearm trafficking, credible threats, and other conduct that endangers people.

A mental-health diagnosis by itself, unusual behavior, political speech, or somebody simply describing another person as "concerning" should not be treated as proof that someone should lose a constitutional right.

Bottom line: Protect lawful gun ownership. Oppose blanket bans and confiscation. Use Texas's existing public-safety laws before creating new firearm restrictions. Expand free, voluntary firearm-safety education. Encourage secure storage. Focus enforcement on actual threats and criminal conduct.
